Atomic Data Needs for Future High Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy Missions
Abstract
Future high resolution X-ray spectroscopy missions will open discovery space owing to increased spectral resolution, collecting area and/or bandpass. In order to adequately interpret and model the new data, comprehensive and accurate atomic constants will be needed. Analysis tools must be capable of reliably modeling and interpreting the spectra. We have undertaken a systematic effort to identify and carry out tasks related to this goal, for the XRISM mission. In this presentation we will describe our activities: (i) Tracing the science requirements to requirements for fundamental atomic physics quantities such as energy levels, cross sections and transition probabilities. (ii) Identifying the laboratory measurements which are needed in order to achieve the needed accuracy, estimating the scope and size of the effort, and prioritizing the list. (iii) Communicating with laboratory astrophysicists to help prioritize their activities. (iv) Studying the sensitivity of spectral models to atomic data to feed into the prioritization of lab astro needs. (v) Studying how software and modeling packages can take into account uncertainties on atomic models and measurements.
